One common question many people have when switching jobs is whether they can change their Health Savings Account (HSA) when changing companies. The good news is that the answer is yes!
When starting a new chapter with a different employer, one question that frequently comes up is whether you can adapt your Health Savings Account (HSA). Rest assured, the flexibility of an HSA works in your favor â you absolutely can!
Options when switching employers and HSAs
When you change employers, you have several options regarding your HSA:
- You can keep your existing HSA and continue to contribute to it.
- You can choose to transfer the funds from your old HSA to a new HSA with your new employer, if they offer one.
- You can also roll over the funds from your old HSA into an Individual HSA account if you become ineligible for an HSA through your new employer.
Contribution rules and transition guidance
It's important to note that in order to make contributions to your HSA, you must be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and cannot be covered by any other non-HDHP health insurance plan.
Changing jobs can be stressful, but managing your HSA doesn't have to be. By understanding your options and following the necessary steps, you can seamlessly transition your HSA to your new employer or into an Individual HSA account.
