Can I Contribute to HSA When on Medicare?

Many people wonder if they can continue contributing to their Health Savings Account (HSA) once they are on Medicare. The short answer is that while you can no longer contribute to an HSA once you enroll in Medicare, you can still use the funds already in your account for eligible healthcare expenses tax-free.

Here are some key points to keep in mind regarding contributions to an HSA when on Medicare:

  • If you are enrolled in Medicare, you are no longer eligible to contribute to an HSA.
  • However, if you had an HSA before enrolling in Medicare, you can continue using the funds in the account for qualified medical expenses.
  • Once you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare, you can use your HSA funds for Medicare premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
  • If you withdraw funds from your HSA for non-qualified expenses after enrolling in Medicare but before turning 65, you will owe income tax on the amount withdrawn, but not the additional 20% penalty that applies to those under 65.

Once you enroll in Medicare, you’re unfortunately no longer able to make contributions to your Health Savings Account (HSA). However, it's important to know that if you had contributions made in the past, you still have access to those funds for qualified medical expenses that arise during your retirement.
