Can I Contribute to My HSA if My Wife Has a HDHP, but I Don't?

If your spouse has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and you don't, you may still be able to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) as a family. HSAs offer a tax-advantaged way to save for medical expenses.

Spouses on separate HDHPs:

  • If both you and your spouse are covered under separate HDHPs, you can each contribute to your own individual HSA accounts.

Spouse with family HDHP:

  • If your spouse has a family HDHP that covers both of you, the contribution limit applies to both of you collectively. You can contribute to a single HSA account in this case.

It's essential to understand the rules and limitations regarding HSA contributions based on your specific situation.

If your spouse is enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) while you are not, there's good news! You can still make contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA) as a family unit, which can help with medical expenses.
