Can I Contribute to My HSA When on Medicare?

Many people wonder if they can continue to contribute to their HSA (Health Savings Account) once they are on Medicare. The answer to this question is no, you are not allowed to contribute to your HSA if you are enrolled in Medicare. However, there are a few important points to consider when it comes to HSAs and Medicare:

1. If you are already on Medicare, you can still use the funds in your existing HSA account to pay for qualified medical expenses tax-free.

2. If you delay enrolling in Medicare and continue to work and have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), you can still contribute to your HSA.

3. Once you enroll in any part of Medicare, including just Part A for example, you are no longer eligible to contribute to your HSA.

It is important to understand the rules surrounding HSAs and Medicare to avoid any penalties or tax implications. While you cannot contribute to your HSA while on Medicare, you can still use the funds in your existing account for medical expenses.

Many individuals approaching retirement ask themselves if it’s possible to keep contributing to their HSA (Health Savings Account) after enrolling in Medicare.
