Many people wonder whether it's possible to have a Health Savings Account (HSA) while enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). The answer is generally no, but there are some exceptions.
Many individuals are curious if they can maintain a Health Savings Account (HSA) while being covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that also includes a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Unfortunately, the general rule stipulates that you cannot have both, due to IRS regulations regarding the compatibility of these accounts.
Exceptions: limited-purpose or post-deductible FSAs
When you have an HDHP with an FSA, you typically cannot open or contribute to an HSA because FSAs are considered incompatible with HSAs due to IRS rules. However, there are certain limited-purpose FSAs that allow you to have both an HSA and an FSA, such as:
- Limited-Purpose FSAs that only cover dental and vision expenses
- Post-deductible FSAs that only kick in after you meet your HDHP's deductible
If your FSA falls under these categories, you may be eligible to have an HSA alongside your HDHP with an FSA. It's crucial to carefully review the specifics of your FSA plan to determine if you can take advantage of both accounts.
However, itâs important to note that there are exceptions. You may qualify for an HSA if your FSA is classified as a Limited-Purpose FSA, which can only pay for dental and vision expenses, or a Post-deductible FSA, which only provides reimbursements once your HDHPâs deductible is met.
