Can You Contribute to an HSA Account If You Are on Medicare?

If you are on Medicare, you cannot contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA). Medicare beneficiaries are not eligible to open or contribute to an HSA because Medicare coverage is considered disqualifying health coverage.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are exclusively available to individuals who are enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and do not have other disqualifying health coverage. Since Medicare is not a high-deductible health plan and provides comprehensive coverage, it prevents individuals from contributing to an HSA.

While Medicare provides essential health coverage for many older adults, it's important to note that if you are enrolled in this program, you are unable to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA). This is due to the fact that Medicare constitutes disqualifying coverage, which excludes you from opening or adding funds to an HSA.
