Can You Contribute to Your HSA if You're Not in an HSA Compatible Plan?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) offer a tax-advantaged way to save for medical expenses, but one common question that arises is whether you can contribute to your HSA if you're not in an HSA compatible plan. The answer is no, you cannot contribute to an HSA unless you are enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that meets the requirements for an HSA.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • HSAs are only available to individuals who are covered by an HDHP
  • For 2021, an HDHP must have a minimum deductible of $1,400 for self-only coverage or $2,800 for family coverage
  • The maximum out-of-pocket expenses for 2021 are $7,000 for self-only coverage and $14,000 for family coverage
  • If you are not enrolled in an HDHP, you are not eligible to contribute to an HSA

It's important to note that even if you have an HSA from a previous HDHP enrollment, you can still use the funds in the account for qualified medical expenses, but you cannot make new contributions unless you are in an HSA compatible plan.

Many individuals wonder about the possibility of contributing to their Health Savings Account (HSA) if they are not enrolled in a plan that qualifies for HSA contributions. Unfortunately, the answer remains the same: to contribute to an HSA, you must first be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that meets the federal requirements.
