Are you on Medicare and curious about maintaining a Health Savings Account (HSA)? Good news! Itâs possible, but there are some important details to consider. You can still have an HSA as long as you keep certain factors in mind.
Medicare HSA eligibility requirements and limits
Medicare itself does not offer HSAs, but you can have an HSA if you meet certain criteria:
- You must be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that is compatible with an HSA.
- You cannot contribute to your HSA if you are enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B, but you can use the funds already in your HSA for qualified medical expenses.
- If you are still working and covered by an employer's HDHP, you can continue to contribute to your HSA. However, once you enroll in Medicare, you can no longer contribute to the HSA.
- If you delay enrolling in Medicare and continue working past the age of 65, you can continue to contribute to your HSA until you enroll in Medicare.
Benefits of using an HSA on Medicare
Having an HSA while on Medicare can be a valuable tool for saving for medical expenses that are not covered by Medicare. It can also provide tax benefits as your contributions are tax-deductible and grow tax-free.
