Short answer: Plans with copays typically do not qualify for an HSA, unless the copay plan meets HDHP requirements set by the IRS.

Copays usually disqualify HSAs

Health insurance plans that come with copays generally do not qualify for a Health Savings Account (HSA).

An HSA is designed to work alongside a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), which typically does not include copays. This is because an HDHP must meet certain criteria set by the IRS in order to be HSA-compatible.

Exceptions when copays meet HDHP rules

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. If a health insurance plan with copays also meets the requirements of an HDHP, then it may qualify for an HSA. This means that the plan must have a high deductible, meet the out-of-pocket maximum limits, and not offer coverage for any non-preventive services before the deductible is met.

Typically, health insurance plans that feature copays do not qualify for a Health Savings Account (HSA). The primary reason for this is that HSAs are intended to be utilized with High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs), which are characterized by higher deductibles and lesser immediate coverage.
