When you leave your job, your HSA card does not automatically get canceled. However, there are some important factors to consider regarding your HSA account and card when transitioning from one job to another:
5. Stay informed: It's essential to stay informed about the status of your HSA account, especially when transitioning between jobs. Make sure to update your contact information with your HSA provider to receive important notifications and account statements.
When you leave your job, itâs important to remember that your HSA card remains active. Unlike your employer-specific benefits, your HSA account is uniquely yours and continues to be available for your use.
How you can use funds between jobs
1. Your HSA account is yours to keep: Your HSA account is owned by you, not your employer. Therefore, you can continue to use the funds in your HSA even after you leave your job.
2. Access to funds: You can still use your HSA card to pay for qualified medical expenses, regardless of your employment status. This means you can continue to use your HSA funds for medical expenses for yourself and your dependents.
COBRA, contributions, and staying informed
3. Activating COBRA: If you opt for COBRA coverage after leaving your job, you can still use your HSA funds to pay for qualified medical expenses, including premiums.
4. Contributions: If your previous employer was contributing to your HSA, those contributions will cease once you leave the job. However, you can continue to make contributions to your HSA on your own, subject to the annual contribution limits set by the IRS.
