Short answer: To qualify for an HSA, you must be covered by an HDHP, not be a dependent on someone else’s tax return, not be enrolled in Medicare, and not have other non-HDHP health coverage.

HSA eligibility requirements you must meet

Qualifying for a Health Savings Account (HSA) is a great way to save for medical expenses while enjoying tax benefits. To be eligible for an HSA, you must meet certain criteria:

  • You must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
  • You cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return
  • You cannot be enrolled in Medicare
  • You cannot have other health coverage that is not an HDHP

After meeting requirements, open and contribute

Once you meet these requirements, you can open an HSA and start contributing to it to save for qualified medical expenses.

To qualify for a Health Savings Account (HSA), make sure you are enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), which is designed to keep your premium costs lower while you take on a higher deductible.
