How Much Can an Employer Fund to an HSA on My Behalf?

Employers can contribute to your HSA on your behalf. The amount they can contribute varies, but the IRS sets annual contribution limits that apply to both you and your employer combined. For 2021, the limits are $3,600 for individuals and $7,200 for families.

Employers can contribute up to:

  • The annual contribution limit if they choose to fully fund your HSA
  • A different amount they determine based on company policy or benefits package

It's important to note that any contributions made by your employer count towards the annual contribution limit set by the IRS. If you contribute to your HSA on your own as well, the total of your contributions plus your employer's contributions cannot exceed the IRS limit.

Many employers are keen to support your health and well-being by contributing to your Health Savings Account (HSA) on your behalf. Depending on your employer's policies, they can provide funding that can help you meet your yearly healthcare expenses.
