Short answer: You can confirm HSA contributions in W-2 Box 1 by checking Box 12 for Code W and, if needed, comparing Box 1 wages to Box 5 taxable wages.

Using W-2 Box 12 Code W

One way to determine if your HSA (Health Savings Account) contributions were included in your W-2 Box 1 is to look at Box 12 with Code W on your W-2 form. This box specifically reports any HSA contributions made by both you and your employer.

To check if your HSA (Health Savings Account) contributions were reflected in your W-2 Box 1, first locate Box 12 on your W-2. If it contains Code W, it confirms that both your contributions and those from your employer have been reported here.

If Code W is missing, contact HR

If you don't see Box 12 with Code W on your W-2, you may need to contact your employer's HR department to confirm if your HSA contributions were included in Box 1.

Compare Box 1 wages versus Box 5

Another way to check is to compare your total wages in Box 1 to your taxable wages in Box 5. If your HSA contributions were not included in Box 1, there should be a difference between these two amounts.
