What Age Do You Have to Be to Collect on Pers or HSA?

When it comes to collecting on a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) or Health Savings Account (HSA), age requirements vary depending on the type of account.

For a PERS:

  • Minimum age requirement is usually 18 years old, but some providers may require the individual to be at least 65 years old.

For an HSA:

  • To open an HSA, an individual must be covered by a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).
  • There are no age restrictions to open an HSA, but there are certain age-related rules when it comes to distributions:
    • At age 65, distributions can be made penalty-free for any reason (normal income tax applies).
    • Before age 65, non-qualified distributions may incur penalties.

When it comes to collecting on a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) or Health Savings Account (HSA), understanding the age requirements is crucial. For PERS, you typically need to be at least 18, although some providers may set this threshold at 65. On the other hand, HSAs are a bit more flexible; while there’s no age limit to open one, distributions taken before age 65 may incur penalties unless they’re for qualified medical expenses.
