What Happens to My HSA If I Join a Non-HSA Plan?

When you join a non-HSA plan, your HSA account does not vanish. However, certain rules will apply to its use. Here's what happens to your HSA if you join a non-HSA plan:

1. You cannot contribute to your HSA:

  • When you are enrolled in a non-HSA plan, like a traditional health plan, you are not eligible to make contributions to your HSA.

2. You can still use the existing funds:

  • The money in your HSA remains available for qualified medical expenses even if you switch to a non-HSA plan.

3. You cannot use the HSA for non-medical expenses penalty-free:

  • If you withdraw funds from your HSA for non-medical expenses while on a non-HSA plan, you may be subject to penalties.

4. You can resume HSA contributions when eligible:

  • If you switch back to an HSA-eligible plan in the future, you can resume contributing to your HSA account.

5. Be aware of tax implications:

  • When you are no longer on an HSA-eligible plan, you may need to consider the tax implications of using HSA funds.

Switching to a non-HSA plan may lead to some confusion regarding your Health Savings Account (HSA), but rest assured, your account still exists and can be used wisely for your healthcare needs.
