One of the key requirements to have a Health Savings Account (HSA) is being covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). An HDHP is a type of health insurance plan that typically has higher deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums, but lower monthly premiums compared to traditional health insurance plans.

When you have an HDHP, you are eligible to open and contribute to an HSA. The combination of an HDHP and an HSA can offer individuals and families a tax-advantaged way to save and pay for qualified medical expenses.

Additional Details:

  • To have a HSA, you must also not be enrolled in Medicare.
  • You cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return if you want to have your own HSA.
  • HSA contributions are tax-deductible, grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free.

To qualify for a Health Savings Account (HSA), you must primarily be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). HDHPs come with higher deductibles but lower monthly premiums, making them a smart option for many individuals and families.

In addition to being covered by an HDHP, you also need to understand that an HSA allows you to set aside funds specifically for medical expenses, which can ease the financial burden of healthcare costs.
