When Can You Not Contribute to an HSA?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are a valuable tool for saving money on medical expenses while reducing your taxable income. However, there are some restrictions on when you can contribute to an HSA. Here are a few instances when you cannot contribute to an HSA:

1. When you are not covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) - To contribute to an HSA, you must be enrolled in an HDHP. If you have other health coverage that is not an HDHP, you are not eligible to contribute to an HSA.

2. When you are enrolled in Medicare - Once you enroll in Medicare, you are no longer eligible to contribute to an HSA. This applies to both Medicare Part A and Part B enrollees.

3. When you are claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return - If you are claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, you are not allowed to contribute to an HSA, even if you meet all other eligibility requirements.

4. When you exceed the annual contribution limits - Each year, the IRS sets limits on how much you can contribute to an HSA. If you exceed these limits, the excess contributions will be subject to taxes.

5. When you are not a U.S. resident alien - Non-resident aliens are not eligible to contribute to an HSA, unless they are married to a U.S. citizen and have elected to be treated as a U.S. resident for tax purposes.

Remember, it's important to understand the rules and regulations surrounding HSAs to avoid any penalties or tax implications. If you find yourself in any of the situations mentioned above, it's best to consult with a tax professional or financial advisor for guidance.
