Where Do I Deduct HSA Contributions on Form 1040 2018 Tax Return?

When it comes to deducting HSA contributions on your Form 1040 2018 tax return, it's important to know the correct place to report this information. HSA contributions are reported on your tax return on different line items depending on how the contributions were made.

If your employer made contributions to your HSA on your behalf, those contributions are typically reported on your W-2 form in Box 12 with a Code W. In this case, you do not need to report those contributions again on your Form 1040.

However, if you made contributions to your HSA yourself, those contributions are reported on your Form 8889, which is attached to your Form 1040. When completing your Form 8889, you will report the total contributions you made for the tax year, as well as any contributions made by others on your behalf.

Once you have the total HSA contributions amount from Form 8889, you will then transfer this amount to your Form 1040. The deduction for HSA contributions is an above-the-line deduction, which means you do not need to itemize to claim it.

On your Form 1040, the deduction for HSA contributions is reported on Line 25 if you are filing as Single or Head of Household, or Line 25 if you are filing as Married Filing Jointly. If you are filing as Married Filing Separately, the deduction is reported on Line 25 of Schedule 1.

Filing your taxes can be daunting, but understanding where to deduct your HSA contributions on your Form 1040 for 2018 is simpler than you might think. If your employer contributed to your Health Savings Account, they'll typically report this in Box 12 of your W-2 under Code W. In this case, there's no need to include these contributions again on your Form 1040.
