Where Does HSA Go on W2?

When it comes to tax season, many individuals wonder where their HSA contributions and distributions should be reported on their W2 forms. It's important to understand these details to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with the IRS regulations.

On your W2 form, you will not find a specific section labeled as 'HSA' like you would for other deductions or income. However, the information related to your HSA can still be found in different sections of the form:

  • Your HSA contributions, which are typically made through payroll deductions, are already deducted from your taxable income. Therefore, they are not separately listed on the W2 form.
  • If your employer makes contributions to your HSA, those employer contributions will be listed in Box 12 of your W2 with a Code W.
  • If you made any additional contributions to your HSA outside of payroll deductions, those can be deducted on your tax return, but they will not be reflected on the W2.
  • If you made any distributions from your HSA during the year, those amounts are not reported on the W2. However, you will receive a Form 1099-SA from your HSA administrator, which you will need to report on your tax return.

It's crucial to keep track of all HSA-related documentation throughout the year to ensure accurate reporting during tax season. By understanding where your HSA information is located on the W2 form, you can easily navigate through the tax filing process.

During tax season, it's common for individuals to feel a bit confused about where to find their HSA contributions and distributions on the W2 form. This is especially true if you’re new to using a Health Savings Account.
